Expected CCT Dates

Expected CCT dates for existing doctors in training

The number of training posts in each specialty is limited by training capacity, available funding and perceived need for CCT holders (or equivalent) in the specialty.  Unless all of these are increased the only way that a new trainee can be recruited is when an existing trainee completes their training.

All current trainees will have an annual review of the progress of their training which includes an estimate of when they will complete their training and receive a CCT. This may be revised to take account of maternity leave, long-term illness or a period of academic research.

This graph and data set provide the latest information on the number of training opportunities expected over the coming years.  Note that approximately 2500 secondary care trainees are recruited in England each year.  Depending on the size of the specialty, not all deaneries will offer new training posts in all specialties in all years.

It is important to factor this information into your future career choices about specialty and geography.

This information is currently only available for England.
