Specialty curriculum

The GMC-approved postgraduate training curriculum for otolaryngology is available here online.

Training pathway

Trainees complete either themed or generic surgical training at ST1 and ST2 level and enter otolaryngology training at ST3 level.*

Length of training

The indicative time frames for each stage are as follows:

  • The initial stage of training in the specialty of ORL: 2 years.
  • The final stage of training in the specialty of ORL: 4 - 5 years.
  • The special interest training in the specialty of ORL surgery: 1- 2 years.

Giving an overall predicted length of training of 7 - 8 years for the majority of trainees entering the specialty.

Qualifications

MBBS or equivalent medical qualification. Entry to ST3 also requires successful completion of MRCS or equivalent at time of application.
