General Surgery

surgery

Nature of the work

General surgery encompasses the specialties of breast, vascular, upper gastrointestinal, colorectal and hepatobiliary surgery.

Working in general surgery

While general surgery was an integrated specialty ten years ago, it is currently being sub-divided into a set of more clearly defined sub specialties and each of these with its own sub-specialist association.

Consultant general surgeons are now usually practitioners in one of the following sub-specialty areas:

Nearly all consultant general surgeons must maintain generalist skills to cope with emergency work and the high volume of routine procedures that make up waiting lists.

The current sudden decline in the need for coronary artery bypass operations and the slow decline in the number of arterial operations have made general surgeons more prepared to maintain their general base.

Common procedures / interventions

These include treatment of hernias, varicose veins and rectal bleeding.

Associated sub specialties

Colorectal, endocrine, upper gastro-intestinal, transplant and breast surgeries.
