Nature of the work

Cardiothoracic surgery deals with the diagnosis and management of the heart, lungs and oesophagus requiring surgery. A small aspect of this specialty is the transplantation of both heart and lungs, which is performed in only eight specialised centres in the United Kingdom. There is also a very small training requirement related to paediatric cardiothoracic practice. 

Working in cardiothoracic surgery

Cardiothoracic surgeons deal with the surgical management of patients with chest problems including the heart and the intra-thoracic great vessels, the lungs and trachea, and the osesophagus. They also carry out lung and cardiac transplantation.

Common procedures / interventions

Coronary artery, valve surgery and intrathoracic malignancy.
