Application to Specialty Programmes

Discussing a case

To apply for specialty training there are strict criteria to be met.  These are :

  • Confirmed registration with the GMC
  • Right to work in the UK
  • English language skills
  • College exams
  • Match the person specification
  • Match the specialty level
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation or equivalent competencies

Further detailed information about these and about the application process to specialty training can be found on the Modernising Medical Careers website.

There is variation in the popularity and number of posts available in specialty training. When considering what specialty to apply for it is useful to bear in mind the competion ratio for posts.

Essentially this is the number of posts available compared to the number of people applying. The competion for posts can be extremely variable and is influenced by factors such as geographical location and service needs so you are urged to be flexible with your choices to give you the best chance of securing a place. Some information on competition ratios in ST3 can be found here
