Presentations

making a presentation

At your interview you may be asked to give a short presentation to the panel on a given topic. You will be given a limited amount of time to prepare the presentation and be informed how long the presentation should last. This will assess your communication skills as well your ability to think under pressure and how you form a well structured response. You may be provided with visual aids such as flip-chart paper and overheads on the day to help you deliver your presentation.  To enable you to perform at your best if you are asked to give a presentation you should:

  • Read the brief carefully. It is important that you are delivering what is being asked of you.
  • Produce a rough structure.
  • It may help if you use diagrams and pictures to make your presentation more interesting. You should consider what your presentation style is and how comfortable you are with using diagrams etc. The interview is not the time to try something completely new and unnatural to you.
  • Your presentation should use a clear structure. Consider:
    • What will be covered in the presentation
    • Deliver the presentation
    • Finish with a summary and conclusion
  • Speak clearly and be aware of your body language. Try not to fidget with clothing or jangle keys in your pocket.
  • You will be given a time limit. It is very important that you adhere to this and do not overrun.
