Throughout your 2 year Foundation
Programme you will keep a portfolio of all the assessments and
achievements that you have undertaken.
Electronic portfolios are becoming more common within
Foundation Schools and you will be advised on this during your
induction. This is a very important document to you and your future
career. Keep this vital document up to date as it will be required
for future job applications and interviews. Currently on the
Foundation Programme assessment is carried out in these main
ways:
1/Team Assessment
Behaviour (TAB): where colleagues familiar
with your work give constructive feedback on your performance and
abilities.
2/Direct observation of
doctor/patient encounters: where you will be observed
in various settings and situations allowing for timely and
constructive feedback. There are 2 main types of direct
Observations:
- Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS)
- Mini Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX)
You should view these as opportunities to gain
feedback from a range of health professionals so you can be
confident that you are getting an overall picture of how you are
progressing. As it is YOUR responsibility to
arrange these assessments it is a good way to become more confident
with your communication and team working skills, attributes that
are important as you progress throughout your career.
3/Case Based Discussion
(CBD): A structured review of your work and cases
that you have had direct involvement with. You will have the
opportunity to discuss with a senior clinician aspects of your
decision making, judgement and clinical reasoning
4/ Procedural log book: The log book
has been developed so you can record that you have satisfactorily
completed some required procedures at least once during Foundation
Year 1 (F1).
5/ Developing the clinical teacher
assessment: A review of your teaching experience.
