Academic Medicine

researcherAcademic medicine describes scientifically trained clinicians who work in both patient care and research. Those working in academic medicine are usually called clinical academics. A recent review sums up what it’s like working in academic medicine.

Some clinical academics also teach or lecture. Academic medicine can be the path to a varied and interesting career. Whilst it is not an easy choice, it can be very fulfilling.

The provision of clear, coherent and integrated training and career paths for medically qualified academic staff is a key factor in establishing the position of the UK as a world leader in clinical research.

The following reports make excellent background reading.

research report

“Medically and dentally qualified academic staff: Recommendations for training the researchers and educators of the future” called for initiatives that integrated the development of academic skills with each of the key stages of a clinician's career. Such integrated training opportunities are now in place and aim to attract doctors who have the potential to become leaders in clinical research and education.

Academic Foundation Programmes

For information on applications see the page on applying to the Academic Foundation Programme.

Doctors who have completed their foundation programme or who are part way through their specialty training could enter at the NIHR ACF level. Those already in possession of a PhD/MD and with specialty experience are more likely to be eligible for NIHR CLposts.

Entry to the IAT scheme is through competitive recruitment, which is now coordinated by the NIHR Trainees Coordinating Centre (NIHR TCC) and undertaken by local education and training boards (LETBs).
